Gosport Museum and Art Gallery are looking for assistant volunteers who could provide visitor and retail services to the general public, help at events or assist with collection care.

We would like people who could help to deliver a good visitor experience to people of all ages. This includes stewarding the Gallery and Play Gallery, welcoming visitors, helping at events, and making sure the artworks and collections on display or in store are kept safe and enjoyed by the public. There is the opportunity to assist with caring for collections including cleaning objects for display, digitising items, and recording collections. Also there is the option to volunteer during school workshops with primary aged pupils helping them to engage with our collections.

Specific tasks and duties may include:

- To welcome, help and inform visitors to ensure they enjoy their visit, and do so safely, and to provide a point of contact for visitors to the main gallery and the Play Gallery.
- To promote and encourage the use of the full range of services and facilities at Gosport Museum and Art Gallery.
- When necessary, to collect visitor statistics and encourage visitors to add to the exhibition comments book.
- When necessary, provide accurate cash handling and till procedures.
- To monitor the Gallery to ensure contents and premises are safe and secure, including high value loan items.
- To promote and sell retail items within the Gallery space.

Skills

The skills required depend on the role you choose.

The front of house roles combines administration, customer services, retail and security aspects and as such we require reliable, responsible and outgoing people to be Gallery and event assistants. You will be the front-of-house representative of Hampshire Cultural Trust and must be confident dealing with (or passing on) enquiries, initiating conversations and welcoming visitors to the Gallery, Play Gallery and events. You should be assertive enough to ask visitors questions or challenge their behaviour, if necessary. Ideally, we will have 2 volunteers in the Gallery at one time although it may be the case that volunteers are by themselves due to absence/sickness of others or due to lack of volunteer availability.

Collections care roles involve data collection and recording, an understanding of the importance items in the collection, and the ability to implement systems therefore a reasonable level of written and literacy skill is necessary.

The nature of all roles means we are looking for reliable and trustworthy volunteers who are comfortable working independently and as part of a team.
