Your Community Needs You!

06/07/2020

Would you like to help Gosport residents in need during the C-19 situation? Do you have at least 5 hours a week available for the next couple of months? You may like to support the C-19 Gosport Community Response Project as a Volunteer and make a real difference to the lives of local people.

Gosport Voluntary Action in partnership with Gosport Borough Council, have been helping Gosport residents since lockdown began in March. A team of dedicated volunteers have been undertaking shopping, prescription deliveries and regular friendly phone calls, and so far more then 6000 tasks have been completed for over 500 households. The project allows residents to keep their independence as much as possible, and have their chosen shopping and prescription delivered to them when needed, and before crisis point. As government support is reducing from 1 August, the Community Response Project will continue to help residents, thanks to the National Lottery Community Fund and donations from supporters.

The volunteering roles are flexible and those supporting the service have found the experience to be heartwarming and rewarding.

Jagjeet, C-19 Volunteer said: “helping the community, and seeing people’s faces as they open the door and enjoying a chat as I drop off shopping, makes it all worthwhile and I’m pleased to be able to help.”

Volunteers are needed for the following roles:

C-19 Support Volunteer – undertaking regular shopping on behalf of older/vulnerable residents. Read more and apply.

C-19 Prescription Delivery Volunteer – undertaking one off prescription deliveries on an assigned day each week. Read more and apply.

C-19 Shopping Buddy Volunteer – meeting an older/vulnerable resident at a supermarket and helping them to do their shopping safely. Read more and apply.

Some IT skills, own transport, internet access and DBS/police vetting check is required. For safety reasons and inline with government guidelines, Volunteers need to be between 18 and 70 years old and have no underlying health conditions. Briefing, ID badge and PPE will be provided and mileage will be reimbursed at 45p/mile.

Sue, C-19 Volunteer has found it a positive and enjoyable thing to do. Sue said “I particularly enjoy the interaction with people on their doorstep and the look on people’s faces when they open the door and see me and a smile erupts on their faces.  They are pleased to see me and these moments brighten my day as well.”

If you are interested in becoming involved or have questions, please see links above or contact Roy Johnson, Volunteer Coordinator on c19coordinator@gva.org.uk or phone 07570 950898

C-19 Volunteer, Phillip, said “I’ve gained a huge sense of pride and achievement in volunteering for the C-19 community response. Being a people person I’ve really enjoyed talking, and listening and having a good chat on the doorstep.”
