Discover Local Opportunities This Volunteers’ Week

01/06/2021

In honour of Volunteers’ Week, we’re delighted to reveal our latest Volunteer Opportunities publication!  It’s a little shorter than in previous years, as activity is still restricted, but this is definitely a case of quality over quantity; some fantastic and exciting roles are available.  We look forward to sharing more opportunities with you via our website and social media as things continue to open up.

Make a difference in Gosport

Volunteer and change your life! Volunteering can make a real difference to your own life and the lives of those around you. You may be looking to make new friends, develop valuable skills for your CV, boost your confidence or help others in the community. A wide variety of roles are available in and around Gosport, and we’re here to help you get started. Go Volunteer is Gosport Voluntary Action (GVA)’s volunteer brokerage service, matching individuals to opportunities in the local area. You can find roles on our website, or if you’d like support in finding the right role, contact us and we can help you take the next step.

Explore history and shape the future

Gosport Heritage Open Days organise an impressive range of free tours, events and activities that bring local history and culture to life each September. They are looking for enthusiastic volunteers to fulfil a variety of roles, including Social Media Assistant, Guide/Helper and Admin Assistant.

The friendly team at Gosport Gallery are running a number of volunteer projects over the summer, to help them choose and develop content for their exciting new museum! Museum Shaper volunteers will meet weekly or fortnightly over a period of 6-8 weeks.

Be part of a group

Loud & Proud, for people aged 16-25, and VoluntHeroes, for those over 25, are a great way to develop new skills and meet new people through a variety of volunteering activities.

Reduce loneliness, with a chat

We are looking for Befriending Volunteers to provide companionship for local people who are isolated. This rewarding opportunity is very flexible and can fit with your own commitments. Befrienders are asked to make a regular weekly visit or phone call; you may like to go for a walk, help write a letter, share interests or just catch up over a cuppa. You could also make video calls with our brand new TogetherNet service. As little as half an hour a week is all it takes to make a big difference!

Humanitarianism from home

Portsmouth City of Sanctuary (PCoS) offers safety and sanctuary to anyone fleeing violence and persecution, including new asylum seekers coming to Gosport. They are looking for a home-based Admin Volunteer to help identify sources of funding, attend monthly Zoom meetings and assist with paperwork.

All together now…

Brendoncare Clubs are looking for Volunteer Choir Leads for their friendly and informal Singing for Fun group (currently online). You would guide the members to learn new songs, practice existing songs and most importantly have fun!

Encourage through activity

Enable Ability focuses on the welfare and advancement of disabled people of all ages through a range of inclusive services providing fun, stimulation and friendship, whilst giving families and carers much needed respite. Volunteers are currently sought to help at the Wheelchair Basketball Club (based in Portchester), Junior Club and Youth Project. Activities take place in group sessions, so these roles are highly energetic and sociable.

Be a listening ear

Butterflies Bereavement Support provides friendship and bereavement support groups in Lee-on-the-Solent. They are looking for people with empathy and good listening skills to welcome service users and encourage conversations.
They are also looking for Telephone Friendship Buddies to call a couple of lonely and isolated people each week to check that they are okay, have a general chit chat and provide that essential link with the outside world.

Support a parent and child

Hampshire SENDIASS offers accurate, up to date and impartial resources and information about the law on special educational needs and disability. They are looking for Independent Parental Supporters to work with parents, ensuring they can access and understand this information, as well as encouraging them to express their views.

Lead the way to well-being

Walking for Health is an accredited programme of volunteer-led group walks, enabling people to increase their physical activity, improving their fitness and mental well-being in a fun and sociable way. The popular scheme is looking for new Volunteer Walk Leaders, who will be trained to develop routes and guide groups of walkers.
