Holocaust Memorial Day (HMD) 2020 will mark the 75th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau. In commemoration of this landmark anniversary, HMD Trust has asked communities around the country to create their own Memorial Flame artwork, 75 of which will be displayed at the UK Ceremony for HMD 2020, creating a unique national exhibition.
GVA warmly invites you to contribute to Gosport’s Memorial Flame, by decorating a small square of fabric with your own pattern or design inspired by Holocaust remembrance*. These decorated pieces will then be amalgamated into a patchwork Memorial Flame.
Representatives from community organisations (co-ordinators, volunteers or service users) are invited to drop in to the participation session at GVA on Thursday 15 August, any time between 10:30 and 13:30, and spend a few minutes decorating a patch (no art/craft skills required), learning about the Holocaust and meeting other members of our community. Materials and inspiration to help you create your design will be provided.
*Holocaust Remembrance is acknowledgement of the millions of people victimised and killed by Nazi persecution between 1933 and 1945. Targeted groups included Jewish and Romani people, people with disabilities, homosexual people, non-Caucasian/European people and those who resisted the Nazi regime, among others. The Holocaust threatened the fabric of civilisation, and genocide must still be resisted every day. Even in the UK, prejudice and the language of hatred must be challenged by us all.
