GVA Statement on Ukraine

03/03/2022

The Trustees, Staff and Volunteers of Gosport Voluntary Action are all shocked and saddened by the events happening in Ukraine and the developing humanitarian crisis resulting from the attacks by Russia.

As a compassionate, community organisation at the heart of Gosport we, like you, are keen to support however we can.

We are also conscious of the significant amounts of acts of compassion being done by residents of Gosport already and in the wider Hampshire County, UK, Europe and globally.

Many donation centres in the UK have already closed to donations because they are overwhelmed. We have been in discussion with the Emergencies Partnership for the South East, also with British Red Cross, and at this time have not been asked to activate our staff or facilities.

We will offer support to any of our member organisations in work they are doing to support this crisis but we also actively encourage individuals who are able to, to donate via the major charities who have well established structures in place to support these types of events.

**Updates from Jacob’s Well, Thurs, 10th March 2022**
Due to the overwhelming, but hugely appreciated, generosity and kindness of groups and individuals around Gosport, Jacob’s Well Care Centre, at the time of this update on Thursday, 10th March 2022, are currently suspending the receipt of physical donations, due to storage capacity, as announced on their Facebook page. Having reached maximum capacity for storing physical items, Jacob’s Well are now requesting monetary donations via a Go Fund Me page to contribute towards lorry and fuel costs, to transport the donated items safely to Ukraine. Given the rapidly changing status of the Ukraine crisis appeal, for the latest updates from Jacob’s Well, and to keep abreast of their donation requests or suggestions, please visit the Jacobs Well Facebook page.

Original message (published 3rd March 2022)
We know many people cannot donate financially, but still wish to support. In this case, one of GVA’s Member Organisations, Jacob’s Well Well Care Centre (jacobswellcarecentre.co.uk) is collecting donations, but please do check with them regarding the specifics of what they are collecting. Contact details: Jacob’s Well Unit 1 & 2, Toronto Place, Gosport, PO12 4UZ, Tel: 02392 583050. Opening hours: Monday-Saturday 9am-5pm

Suggested donations are:

  • First aid supplies such as paracetamol, ibuprofen, aspirin, face masks, hand gels and dressings
  • Food items such as Ovaltine, hot chocolate, protein bars, porridge, oats and any non-perishable food products
  • Baby milk and baby food (including that for allergic and lactose intolerant babies)
  • Cat and dog food
  • Clothing items such as hats, scarves, gloves or thermals for adults, children and babies
  • Men’s and ladies underwear (all sizes, must be brand new)
  • Other essential items such as nappies, wet wipes, baby toiletries, sanitary towels, toiletries, blankets, foam mats and sleeping bags, torches and batteries and thermos flasks

There is further information and advice from the National Council of Volunteer Organisations here on how you can support in a non-financial matter and also links to specific support for minority groups who may be at higher risk in this crisis including members of the LGBTQ community and Feminist groups (https://blogs.ncvo.org.uk/2022/03/02/charities-civil-society-ukraine/).

Supporting the people of Ukraine during this war is something we all wish to do and we hope this advice allows you to find a way that is appropriate for you.

Signed,

Kay Hallsworth
Chief Executive Officer
