Cakes for good causes: Raising funds in support of Beyond Reflections

On Thursday, 28th July, GVA opened its doors to the local community for a morning of ‘cakes for good causes’, namely through a fundraising cake sale in support of local charity, Beyond Reflections, a Hampshire charity which provides counselling and emotional support to transgender, non-binary and gender-questioning adults and their families.

The event was part of Beyond Reflections’ #TNBake Summer Fundraising campaign, which invites charities, neighbourhoods and individuals across Hampshire to get together to bake and sell cakes to raise funds for, and awareness of, their vital cause. Beyond Reflections is currently able to support more than 150 regular group members each month, and have opened a second Wellbeing drop-in in Southampton, all through donations.

Community Spirit, GVA’s supported volunteering group for local adults with learning disabilities or mental health struggles, played a pivotal role in the event, helping to welcome guests and serve teas, coffees and a whole host of tasty treats – many of which were home-baked by either the Community Spirit members themselves, or by the GVA team. Local sandwich shop, Quay Lane Sandwich Bar, also  generously donated a selection of custom-designed cake sales especially for the occasion, and these proved to be a particular hit!

Reflecting on the day, Clare Shaw, GVA’s Fundraising Advisor, commented: “Last week we ran a cake sale in support of Beyond Reflections, a Southampton-based charity helping trans adults and their families. Our Community Spirit group helped with the decorations, setting up the room and selling the cakes. A variety of visitors popped in from around Gosport, making it a real social event. We have raised an impressive £70, which is just wonderful.”

This total will be directly donated to Beyond Reflections, helping them to deliver mental wellbeing services to trans+ people in need of support. By seeking to create a world where trans and non-binary people are free to live as their authentic selves, expressing their gender identity as they see fit and without prejudice from employers, colleagues, friends and family, Beyond Reflections offers a crucial service in our community.

If you were unable to attend the event last week, but would still like to make a donation to Beyond Reflections, you can do so online here.

Alternatively, if you’re feeling inspired to take action and host your own bake sale in your local neighbourhood or community in support of Beyond Reflections, why not start gathering up your friends and get baking today! This fun initiative is a great way to catch up with friends, spread the word about Beyond Reflections’ important work and show your support.
